The Yuu 一遊

My first impression of this place was that the overall decor resembles very much like The Mon @ CWB. Once I looked at their menu, it just further reinforced my assumption due the the series of similarities between them. (I am still not sure by the way.) Let's go back and talk about the decor. The environment looks very much Japanese in my opinion and the ambiance (ie: lighting) was great as well. Not too dark but very soft and mild. Such an atmosphere is great for light meals after work with a few friends and chat over a few beers.

(1) A very fresh fish / Sashimi (Daily Special)
I forgot what was the name of this fish but it was very fresh indeed. (I only know it was not 池魚) There were various condiments in the center of the plate for you to mix with the very thinly sliced sashimi but I personally preferred it the way it was, plain fresh sashimi with just a bit of the sauce.

(2) The Yuu Salad 一遊沙拉
Interesting use of ingredients for this dish. In addition to the normal greens, there were tapioca (those bubbles form in Bubble Tea) and plain mini dumplings (aka "tong yue") as part of the ingredients. These two items provided an interesting texture to the salad. However, the dressing was a bit too watery in my opinion.

(3) Yellow Tail Belly Sashimi (Hamachi) with Geoduck 油金魚/象拔蚌
According to the staff, both the yellow tail and geoduck were daily special and arrived that afternoon. The staff explained in such detailed on their freshness that we might as well give it a try. The Hamachi belly was very nice, the fish oil / fatty part of it slowly melted in the mouth. Of course Toro is still the best in terms of the melting effect/sensation but the one being served was above average already. The geoduck on the other hand was very disappointing. Not only was the portion smaller than expected (we order a whole geoduck expecting a bigger one of course), but it was not that fresh at all. It was chewy but crisp but taste -wise it was not very appealing because it did not taste very fresh in my opinion.

(4) Robatayaki Selection
(Grilled OX tongue 牛舌 / Grilled Salty Fresh Eel 鹽燒鰻魚 / Grilled Minced Chicken 免治雞肉 / Grilled pork with Eggplant 豬肉茄子 / Grilled Quail Eggs 鵪鶉蛋) We ordered a selection of various grilled items. The ox tongue was fair, would be better if grilled a bit longer. Salty Fresh eel was surprisingly delicious but seemed to have too many tiny fish bones in my opinion. (I know eel has many but there were too many ... ...) The grilled pork with eggplant was another surprise. The softness of the eggplant together with the tender pork slices wrapped around was a good combination both in terms of taste and texture. As for the Minced Chicken and Quail Eggs, both were alright, no surprises.

(5) Omelet with crab meat 蟹肉厚燒玉子
I mentioned it many time, whenever there is anything similar to tamagoyaki, I would order it. There was not difference this time. I am not 100% sure if these are traditional way of doing it in terms of having different fillings for the tamagoyaki, but I enjoyed it very much. The egg has been slowly cooked / grilled but not being overcooked. The texture and taste of the crab meat complimented the texture of the egg nicely. I only wished the egg layers were thicker to give it a better "chewing" sensation. One thing I really liked was the way how it was served. The entire tamagoyaki was served as a whole piece without being cut into slices. Thumbs up!

(6) Soft-shell crab Maki 軟殼蟹卷
A fair dish with freshly deep fried soft shell crab but flavor-wise was a bit weak. I think the hand roll option might be a smarter choice but hard to share.

Likes:
  • Atmosphere & Decor
  • Omelet with crab meat 蟹肉厚燒玉子, very good.
  • Grilled pork with Eggplant 豬肉茄子 robatayaki, the combination of these two ingredients is worth a try

Dislikes:
  • Service was a bit slow in general
  • Very disappointing "fresh" geoduck (象拔蚌)

Homemade Cupcakes !!

Of course I did not make any of these cupcakes, I am not capable of making them YET but I can always learn. My friend made the following wonderfully decorated and delicious cupcakes in celebration for our friend's new born son. Take a closer look at the toppings which were made of icing and the details of the individual items like the blanket, the pair of baby shoes and the ducky. They were all hand crafted !! I personally like it better than those from CoCo earlier. My friend used lemon custard for the filling and the flavor was not too rich and the cupcake itself was very soft enough for me to say: humm ...yummy !

That was not all, she made a different set of chocolate cake and cupcakes for our other friend's birthday. Once again those decorations were hand crafted and I did not want to eat any of them because those were crafted carefully with her time and efforts! Compared with the lemon filling one before, this one was richly flavored but the buttery cream on top balanced the richness very well. Texture wise it was harder than the lemon one which I enjoyed very much as well. I better place my "order" for MY birthday cupcakes as soon as possible!

Noodle House Ippei-An 麵屋一平安

I am fan of Japanese ramen and I have been in search for great ramen in Hong Kong for a while; however, quality varies by a large margin based on experiences. Noodle House Ippei-An at the Miramar Shopping Centre @ TST is (or should I say used to be) one of my favorite ramen locations. Maybe it is just a coincident but ever since it opened its franchise at the Elements, the quality is no longer being maintained. Let me explain in more details.

(1) Baked Eggs 日式煎蛋
I think the name of this dish has been translated incorrectly but anyhow as long as it resembles Japanese pan-fried tamago or tamagoyaki, I would order it. However, it wasn't the quality I was looking for. It was fresh and soft but that was it. Not particularly sweet and it lacked the burn pattern / mark on the surface. Maybe that's why the dish name is not what it is called usually, which is tamagoyaki; but instead simply called baked eggs. (but why pan-fried eggs 煎蛋 in Chinese?)

(2) Higomonzu Ramen 特製什棉豬骨湯拉麵
The first thing I noticed was the smaller portion of ramen and ingredients compared with my previous visits. The soup base was rather weak and the ramen was ... humm ... very ordinary and overly softened; not particularly delicious or special in terms of texture as well. Very disappointing indeed. The stewed pork was overly salty as well. Sigh ... I think I need to find another ramen location to replace this one. (I wonder if the Elements outlet is any better or at least of same quality as before)

Likes:
  • Japanese ramen house decor
  • happy hour beer discount.
Dislikes:
  • Crowded seating arrangement
  • Disappointing Ramen (weak soup base and soft noodles)
  • Portion seemed smaller than before
Update 23 Feb 2010:
After my months of ramen quest in Hong Kong, there are only a few that I would return and (1) Noodle House Ippei-An 麵屋一平安 @ Miramar Shopping Centre remains to be one of my favorite joints despite the recent setbacks. I am yet to try its Elements outlet and will update the experience here accordingly. My other favorite ramen joints are (2) Sapporo Japanese Restaurant 札幌元祖北海道拉麵 @ Forum, (3) Yachiyo Ramen 八千代麵坊 @ Noho. Let the Ramen quest continues!

CoCo @ The Mira

It was my second time here and same as the first, I was here for their cupcakes. It is very natural for people to compare the cupcakes here with Sift's but since I am yet to try Sift, it is really hard for me to do a comparison. What I can do is a simple comparison between my previous visit with this one. First of all, a lot of advertisement have been done for this small cake shops in various food magazines in Hong Kong recently but it is rather hard to attract a great crowd in my opinion because of the limited space and seats available. The outlet is basically in the corner of lobby with only a few stools around a high circular table. Not an idea place to spend the afternoon or even a chit chat session especially when there are people constantly walking around the lobby and coming in/out to the lobby restaurant Yamm located right across from the food counter.

(1) Black Pearl Cupcakes (Chocolate and Black Sesame)
Unlike traditional / American style cupcakes, the toppings were made of buttery cream instead of sugar icing. I personally prefer the sugar icing but it was alright the way they did it. However, the cupcake itself seemed a bit hard to me and too chilled for some reasons. It was slightly better the last time I was here. I did like the inner fillings of the cupcake which consisted of some crunchy chocolate waffle pieces.

(2) Mango Margarita Cupcakes
Nothing special about this cupcake. The same buttery cream was used instead of icing. Most of the flavors were within the cream; but rather light in my opinion. Diced mangoes were fresh and sweet but the cupcake itself was again too hard and overly chilled. Disappointing indeed. I think it is time for me to give Sift and Antique a try and do a comparison among them.

Likes:
  • nice toppings decoration for the cupcakes
  • tentative service (well, not many tables or seating to serve anyhow)
Dislikes:
  • Lack of proper seats
  • Noisy, right at the middle of the lobby
  • overly hard cupcakes

Olive, Greek & Middle Eastern @ Elements

Although a tropical storm was fast approaching, there was plenty of sunlight all around. Ignoring the weather forecast, I took my friend to somewhere we can relax and enjoy our lunch under some natural sunlight. I picked Olive, Greek & Middle Eastern at Elements because I know it is located on the open podium level (Civic Square) whereby there are some outdoors seating available. Although it was a sunny afternoon without any rain, it was rather windy, so we decided to move indoors. Honestly, I was glad that we ended up eating indoors because I found the atmosphere and ambiance very nice indeed. The main dining area is on the second floor with a very soft and mild earthy color tone. Vast windows are installed on the left, letting plenty of natural sunlight to absorb the whole area. We got the window seats overlooking the podium.

The decor of this place is of modern Mediterranean, with an earthy tone to it. The natural sunlight along with the brown and green color scheme provided me with a relax sensation. I rarely spend so much space describing the atmosphere of a restaurant but I do like the environment here (on an early afternoon during the weekend with less people obviously). Ambiance is great but the seat itself is not that comfortable because it seems rather too soft and too low relative to the height of the tables. Apparently they only offer set lunches of either 2 or 3 courses. Although there were many selections to choice form, we both found something we wanted to try.

(1) Chicken threads with walnuts, French beans, coriander, Egyptian fried egg
When I first saw the name of the dish, the first thing that I noticed was the reference to Egyptian fried egg. What exact is a Egyptian fried egg? Turned out it was just a normal egg with some special sauce. For some seasons, I was not sure how it was being fried because it seemed to be it was just being boiled. Nonetheless, it was interesting to have such presentation for a salad and I actually enjoyed it very much. The sauce was not too strong and not too creamy either, a refreshing summer starter. More diced tomatoes would give the dish more colors and maybe a more refreshing sensation.

(2) Moroccan chickpea soup, sauteed school prawns, harissa oil
My friend order this soup and according to her, it was pretty good. When we first ordered, I wondered what exact does "school" prawns mean and from the prawns in the soup when served, it means "tiny" prawns. It is actually a type or category of prawns averaging 10g and 9cm in length. Something new to learn everyday!

(3) Cabbage leaves stuffed with jewelled cracked wheat on honey-ginger tomato sauce and goat cheese cream
A long name for a dish indeed. I really liked its presentation with all the ingredient wrapped inside the cabbage leaves dome. (note: the cabbage leaves were rather elastic and required some skills to cut through it with the provided knife). In terms of taste, I could not really identify the honey-ginger tomato sauce that was supposed to be mixed together with the cracked wheat. Maybe it was supposed that subtle. The sauce which I recognized was more like Porcini mushroom than honey-ginger tomato sauce. If it was indeed Porcini mushroom sauce, it was a good combination with the jewelled cracked wheat which tasted like Italian risotto. I am not an expert in Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine but I am pretty sure it was a fusion dish which I did enjoy, maybe because I like to try new things all the time. Humm ... I wonder of what origin this dish derived from ... Greek? Turkish?

(4) Lamb and Vegetable moussaka with a tomato mint and feta salad
I had to check up what moussaka means because I had no idea and the way it was served was not of our expectation. According to wikipeida: "In the Arab world, moussaka is a cooked salad made up primarily of tomatoes and eggplant, similar to Italian caponata and is usually served cold as a mezze dish." Apparently it wasn't served cold. So I continued my research. It turns out "Turkish moussaka, unlike the Greek version, is not layered. Instead, it is prepared with sautéed eggplants, green peppers, tomatoes, onions, and minced meat." Now we are talking! The moussaka that was served contained plenty of minced lamb which was very tasty. I wasn't sure if there was any eggplant because I only got a small portion from my friend to try but I liked it. Again, I have no idea how this dish is suppose to taste like in the traditional way but all I know is that I liked it and I think it can be a great comfort food!

(5) Rich Chocolate tart with Turkish delight
There was no particular surprise from the chocolate tart but the buttery cream on top was interesting and rather refreshing. It contained herb taste commonly used in middle eastern dishes. I could not name the flavor but the cream certainly did not taste like normal cream. The Turkish delight was very sweet as it should be but not really my cup of tea. Presentation was pretty nice in my opinion. On a negative note, the dessert was served when I was still having my main course!! Those junior staff require more training indeed. The manager did come to apologize soon after but I was very surprised that the junior staff who delivered the dessert attempted to shove the plate onto the table even when my existing plate took most of the table space already.

(6) Turkish Coffee
I consider the Turkish coffee one of the highlights of the day. The staff informed us that the coffee would be very strong and his warning only made me want the coffee even more. The way it was served was rather interesting as well. The coffee was heated / brewed in a copper pot and poured into a tiny transparent Turkish style glass right at the table. The coffee flavor was strong and it contained traces of sweetness to it. I think a bit of sugar was added to the boiling / brewing process. Overall a very nice and smoothing coffee to be enjoyed after a relaxing meal. Not sure if it was prepared in the traditional way but the sweetness somehow lowered the intensity of the flavor in my opinion. Not as strong as I expected it.

Like:
  • Wonderful decor with natural sunlight
  • Turkish version of Lamb Moussaka was good, something new to me
  • Turkish coffee (stronger would be better)
Dislikes:
  • height of the seats relative to the table
  • Inexperienced junior staff (the word junior some what describe the inexperience aspect of the staff but not with such basic rules) - Manager was quick to apologize and that was good.
Avg Spending: HKD 200 - 300 per person

Q88 @ JW Marriott

After a very satisfying dinner on a Friday night, the best thing to do was to just sit and relax and listen to some live music! Usually I come here for their lunch salad buffet @ The Lounge and rarely for drinks at night or for its live music. However, my friend suggested I should give this place a try and we did. It was a nice experience and because it was more spacious, I like it better than Salon de Ning @ The Peninsula in this respect. The decor and band wise, that's another story. I still prfer Salon de Ning. It is certain unfortunate that no more song request is allowed at Salon de Ning for some reasons because the band was pretty good indeed. Anyhow, I think I would come here again for sure after a busy day with a few friends and for a few drinks.

Likes:

  • Very good service (but they should learn know more about the wines being offered)
  • Comfortable seats
Dislikes:
  • Only one kind of free snack: Cashew - Salon de Ning @ The Peninsula has an unlimited supply of varieties of snacks on a platter including chips, nuts, chocolate and etc. (I wonder if they still offer this platter ... )

Sabah Malaysian Cuisine

It took my friend and I a long while to find this location because we were not very familiar with this area. We did not book a table and as a result we had to wait for about 15 minutes. It was around 8pm and the place was full house. The best thing to do at this moment was to look around to see what other people ordered. One thing I was very pleased was that even there was a long line up and the seating area was relatively small, they would give us 2 two-seater tables for just the two of us. Why? It is because they know that there was no way the single table can fit more than 3 dishes, the extra table space is really needed.

(1) Pork Ribs Soup with Herbs 肉骨茶 (Bak Kut Teh)
I have been trying this soup all over Hong Kong, but the results were not that pleasant with most of them being overly weak / light in taste. In my opinion, one of the key elements for a good Bak Kut Teh is the herb flavor. The one being served here was certainly one of the better ones I have tried in a long time with very strong herb flavor which I loved. In addition to the flavor, the ingredients were plenty and the pork ribs were very tender as well. Thumbs up from me!!

(2) Ipoh Beansprouts Chicken 怡保銀芽雞
When I ordered this dish, I wondered how exactly the beansprouts play in the cooking or preparation process; whether they were cooked along with the chicken or etc. It turned the dish should be called Hainan style chicken on top of beansprouts! Those beansprouts were place beneath the de-boned chicken. I wasn't sure what Ipoh really means, likely a name of a place but it tasted very much like Hainan chicken to me. It was good very good though with tender and juicy meat all around, including the breasts. Although the chicken skins were a bit thick, meaning fat, I could not help myself but to eat them together with the meat as well because it would be such a waste!

(3) Beef Rendang 馬來巴東牛肉
Not too spicy at all and I liked it. The sauce was thick and for some odd reasons, it tasted sweeter and I think better after leaving it at room temperature for a while. It was a perfect dish to go with some Roti. The one thing I did not like about this dish was the beef, it was very hard and difficult to chew. Maybe it was the way it should be, just not of my personal liking.

(4) Roti 油酥餅
It was a must to order either Naan or Roti to go with the Rendang, otherwise it would be a waste of the delicious sauce. The Roti was alright and it can be enjoyed by itself as well. I usually order Naan bread but I think I would order Roti more often from now on because it seemed less "floury" (less carbon hydrate) than Naan, meaning I can have more!

(5) Stir Fried Malaysia Noble Green 貴妃苗
I liked it. Very crunchy and fresh. With a little dry garlic on top, it added an extra texture to the whole experience. However, while it was fresh, for some reasons, it lacked any vegetable flavor. It seemed like I was just chewing some fiber!

Likes:
  • 肉骨茶 (bak kut teh) - very strong herb flavor
  • Beef Rendang 馬來巴東牛肉 - love the sauce
Dislikes:
  • Even if an extra table, remain rather uncomfortable in terms of seating arrangement.
  • Very noisy environment
  • Stir Fried Malaysia Noble Green 貴妃苗 - very fresh but lacked the vegi taste / flavor

Hunan Garden Restaurant 洞庭樓

If it wasn't for my friend's introduction, I don't even know this place existed in the middle of Central. It turns out the restaurant has two outlets, one here at Exchange Square and the other one at Times Square which opened less than 2 years ago. The one I visited has been operating for many years, well over a decade perhaps. (note: it belongs to the Maxim group) According to my friend, the one at Times Square has a very contemporary as well as French / Victorian decor. The Central one has a very traditional Chinese decor. When I say traditional, I mean very Chinese kind of traditional and seems to me the decor remained the same for the past decade or so.

The first thing I realized when I arrived was the size of its dinning hall. It is huge! It is hard to imagine a restaurant with such open spaces nowadays, particularly Chinese restaurant. All you see is the color RED & PINK everywhere!!! Typical Chinese I guess. My friend has been dinning here many times over the years so she recommended some special dishes to recommend.

(1) Steamed Vegetables Dumplings 蒸素餃
I love dumplings especially vegetables dumplings. It is not easy to make good vegetables dumplings because the ingredients must remain fairly dry after being steamed. If the ingredients turn watery, it will ruin the whole thing. The vegetables dumpling here was very good indeed. Not only was the ingredients fairly dry (diced bak choy and sliced mushrooms), the skin was of the right thickness so one would not complain on the overly floury texture of the skin. Thumbs up!

(2) Fortune Hunan Ham 江山片片紅富貴火腿
This is a highly recommended dish from my friend. It is basically a Chinese style sandwich with quality Chinese preserved ham prepared along with some special honey sauce. It was very nice indeed. The sweetness of the honey sauce was a good combination with the slightly salty ham which was surprising tender as well. It was the first time I tried such a dish and it would be something I would definitely order again. (note: this item is offered on a per piece basis)

(3) Braised Sliced Cod with Noodles & Vegetables 洞庭樓燒銀鱈魚配麵
The presentation of this dish was definitely not something we expect, especially how the noodles are being served. Each of the three tiny noodles "stack" was of a single spoon size only, while the amount of sauce and number of fillets can serve up to 5 or 6 people at least. What if we have 5 instead of 3 people? Would there be 5 stacks of noodles or it will remain to be 3 only? So ... the number of noodles stacks depends on the number of people? As for the food itself, the cod was very fresh and tender but the sauce was a bit weak in taste; slightly spicy but the sweet and sour taste was definitely too light / weak.

(4) Deep Fried Chicken with Dry Garlic 大漠風沙雞
Although the meat itself was rather dry, it was a decent dish overall. One positive note I like to point out is how they diced up the dry garlic to a finer size. Usually the dry garlic being used would be very crispy (or even hard), dry and fairly large in size that it would be difficult to eat along with the chicken or standalone. What they did here (I assumed) was to make the dry garlic slightly smaller in size and a good job they did because it made it easier to eat / chew and the whole flavor sensation was a pleasant one indeed.

(5) Crispy Rice with Seafood 南湖三鮮鍋巴
I rarely order this dish but I am glad I did. The dipping sauce was freshly prepared with plenty of seafood and it was good enough as a soup by itself in my opinion. I guess there is no correct way to enjoy this dish, you can pour just a tiny bit of the sauce into the crispy rice so to allow the crispiness to remain or you can pour a lot of the sauce / soup into the bowl like I did so the crispy rice would become more chewy. Do it as you like. There were plenty of sauce and I think they should have provided us with more crispy rice to go along with the it. Somehow I feel like the there are no standard portion for some of the dishes, they are being served based on the number of people instead. (even when they dish was a fixed price item, not per person or etc) Maybe! I really don't know but I do wonder whether that is the case.

Likes:
  • Very good service (wrong dish was served initial but they took it back and prepare the right dish again very politely)
  • Thumbs up for Fortune Hunan Ham 江山片片紅富貴火腿
  • Steamed Vegetables Dumplings 蒸素餃
  • Deep Fried Chicken with Dry Garlic 大漠風沙雞 (especially the finer dry garlic)

Dislikes:
  • Some serving portions seem to depend on the number of people.
  • Braised Sliced Cod with Noodles & Vegetables (why just 3 small stacks of noodles?)

Coffee Assembly @ SoHo

In addition to Antique, another little hideaway place in the SoHo area which I frequent is the Coffee Assembly. (during Thursday to Sunday only because they are closed on the other 3 days) It is a cozy and clean environment for a coffee break, a chat or a moment for personal reflection. I love the sofa seats where you can really just sit back and relax. As the name suggests, it is purely a place for you to enjoy coffee. Of course they do offer a few food items, but coffee is the key here! Also, it is the friendly staff that really brings me back again and again to this wonderful hideaway. They treat customers as friends, they really want you to appreciate the coffee and the joy of it as well. A genuine dedication to coffee.

I needed a moment of personal reflection during lunch break so there I was, arrived sharp at 1pm when they open for the day. I ordered an espresso made from their own TERRA - Earth blend. It was surprising smooth and soothing. I usually have their FUOCO - Fire blend but I personally prefer my selection today. If you want to check out the details of their blend, check out their website. Sorry to those latte art lovers, I did not order a latte today so no pictures of any latte art. I know I am being picky but if there can be more sunlight coming from windows, it would be a great place to spend a day on the weekend to just read under natural sunlight and have a few cups of great coffee.

Likes:

Dislikes:

Gourmet Burger Union

I am usually not very harsh when reviewing restaurant, but this might be the first one to break that rule. Dropped by this place while in search for nice burger for lunch but I should have been less lazy and continue walking up to the SoHo area to find another one. First thing I noticed was that the menu was rather confusing, with words all over the wall / board. On the left was a bunch of individual items / ingredients to select from and on the right was a list of pre-set burgers. This place is promoting the "build your own burgers" concept hence the large selection. I was not sure where to start and stood there for over a minute until someone came over to help me. I ended up picking the (1) Jimmy the Greek value combo which comes with fries and a can of Cheery Coke (imported directly from the US for sure).

This place is more like a fast food burger joint with two dozen or so stools around some bar tables. The kitchen area was of open style hence the greasy smell you would definitely carry with you when you leave. I arrived around 1pm (peak lunch hour) but there were only 5 customers and over 7 or 8 staff in total (including the cooks).

(1) Jimmy the Greek
The main condiments under the bun were grilled peppers, cheese, black olives and hummus. Alright, where should I start. The bun was cold, the beef was definitely overcooked even when the menu said medium was the standard, the sauce was overly sour for some reasons and the fries were stale! Did I mention the beef was very dry as well? Maybe I picked an interesting style to try but the bun and beef should not be cold and dry respectively.

Its key slogan is "build your own burger," and I think they are right about that or at least trying to tell me something: I should make my own burger at home!
