Kimberley Chinese Restaurant 君怡閣中菜廳 (Hong Kong)

Sticky Rice Stuffed Roasted Baby Piggy

Slurp! Yeah, I overused this word recently but that is the most appropriate word to describe my experience at Kimberley Chinese Restaurant 君怡閣中菜廳.  Perhaps "Oh Slurp"would be more fitting? It was a foodies gathering with Mochachocolata Rita, TomEatsJenCook (+ the great coverage of the meal as well), HK Epicurus, @Supercharz, @Stegersaurus and @DimSumDiva. Not only did we enjoy the meal, we left with smiles and a few extra inches of waistline! This place has been awarded Bib Gourmands with Michelin 1* (thanks to Peech for pointing it out, a careless mistake on my part) but honestly not much of a meaning to me other than another ... reference from yet another food guide. Even when I am writing about it, I am thinking about the thin, crispy skin of the roasted piggy! Not just another piggy but Roasted Suckling Pig Stuffed with Sticky Rice (金陵乳豬)! Okay, I am way ahead of myself here! Let me start from the beginning!

Now that I looked back, it was a meal with plenty of hot clay pots!!! It was a cold night but I think we went a little overboard with the number of clay pots items. Nah!! It was cold, hot clay pot keeps the food hot for longer so perfect for the night! Let's give our thanks to @Stegersaurus who ordered for all of us and  travelled all the way to the "darkside" TST to place the deposit for the special piggy! (no matter how close or far, it is the gesture that matters! thanks!) We started with something simple, a hot claypot of seafood bean curds I think, nothing spectacular to be honest.

Next was the Braised Ribs of Beef with Lemongrass gravy was ... OMG! I hardly use OMG to describe a dish but this one I have to, I just have to! I like the aroma of lemongrass, anything lemongrass I heart so it was quite understandable to see me turning the "turn table" every 2 minutes so I can indulge myself in the pot of tender, juicy braised ribs of beef! Rich and deep flavors every bite as if the ribs of beef have been braised for hours! (maybe more than a few hours!)

IMG_0051

Not only was the pot huge, the bone was huge as well. I think they left the bone in there to show diners they put almost every part of the cow in the making of this dish. Thumbs up! Two thumbs up!

IMG_0053

Next was salty chicken in clay pot which was ... quite flavorful but when compared with the braised ribs of beef, I am sorry to say it was like a big drop from having a climax! I just kept on turning the ribs of beef my way!

IMG_0055

Am I ready for another climax so soon after? Why not! As soon as the famous and traditional Roasted Suckling Pig stuffed with sticky rice (金陵乳豬) was rolled out, ALL OF US... and I mean ALL OF US jumped out of our chairs with our camera and snap away!!! We were fighting for the best shots. Kind of funny now that I think of it, the little piggy wasn't going anywhere but our stomachs, why fighting over the shooting spots while we can take out time haha.

Sticky Rice Stuffed Roasted Baby Piggy

The suckling pig was tiny! Cute yet delicious baby piggy. Soon after our snapshots session, the staff quickly bring out the chopping knife ready to cut this little piggy into thick slices!

Sticky Rice Stuffed Roasted Baby Piggy

As the name suggested, it was stuffed with rice, slightly sticky rice to be exact.

Sticky Rice Stuffed Roasted Baby Piggy

The skin was crispy, the layer of fat was just right! (after all it was a baby big, should not have too much fat right? HAHA)

Sticky Rice Stuffed Roasted Baby Piggy

This mark the end of my climatic post! I need to sleep and dream about yummy food! I really don't mind having such a climatic meal again soon!!! Let me end this post with one way ... OMG! (hummm did we order any vegi or I just forgot to take pictures when falling in love with the ribs of beef?)

Likes:
  • Roasted Suckling Pig stuffed with sticky rice (金陵乳豬) - you have to try it to understand in my opinion.
  • Braised Ribs of Beef with Lemongrass gravy - thumbs up! ribs of beef very tender and full of flavors! The sauce was something you want to drink by the spoonful as well!

Dislikes:
  • Most of the dishes mentioned were quite salty, high in sodium level.
Avg Spending: HKD 200 - 300 per person

Jason, I don't think they received a star from Michelin. You might want to check again...

I'm sorry to say... Stegersaurus LIVES on the dark side! I KNOW, RIGHT? CRAZY! ;) Oh yes we had some lettuce with shrimp paste, but that was the least interesting of them all. Pig all the way.

We did have some veggies with that prawny taste thing that night! In the claypot with lettuce or something? Can't believe u didn't take a pic of it when you were just too infatuated with the other very good dishes :D:D Talk about being overly excited.

OK, I also commit to the same once in a while ^_^' as I get overly excited like a kid, and just start biting in right away lol ! Ok if I wasn't on a diet that night, I would have eaten more of the babe that night - still need to lose off my weight gained. 4.5Kg omg. Just another 2Kg to go! :(

Jason said...

@Suzanne: yeah! let's pick and date and we go meet miss piggy! haha

@Pat: Yeah, I think you need to order it in advance (one day in advance perhaps) and "may" require a deposits as well.

@Cheeky angel: yeah! but make sure you have enough people to share it!

@Razlan: you have to go give it a try! Hike for 6 hours the day after!

@Anonymous: yeah, need to make advance reservation and possibly a deposit as well. At least in our case.

The roasted suckling pig stuffed with sticky rice is very mouth-watering. I'm wondering if the rice is already cooked before stuffing inside the pig or it is cooked inside the pig's body while roasting it.

@Dora: give it a try when you are here:)

@Sandra Marcsco: to my knowledge, it has been cooked, stir-fried to be exact befoe stuffing them in for roasting. It gives extra aroma and flavor as well.
